On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariffs on imports as part of what he called “Liberation Day.” The U.S. government will impose a minimum 10% tariff on all countries, with higher penalties on 60 nations Trump referred to as the “worst offenders.” China was hit hardest, with 54% tariffs imposed on all Chinese imports into the United States. Canada, formerly a free-trade partner with America, faces a 49% tariff rate.
With stock markets immediately plummeting in response to the announcement, world leaders reacting swiftly with threats of reciprocal tariffs, and economics predicting a national and global recession, it’s hard to predict if the new tariffs will stick. After all, Trump has announced and quickly rescinded tariffs before.
But whatever comes next, one fact is clear: Global shippers need a way to see, and react, to changing dynamics — including trade regulations and duties — in real time across the length of their end-to-end supply chains. Companies relying on manual processes, consumer-grade spreadsheets, and human analysis to make global trade decisions simply can’t keep up. They won’t be able to make profitable, financially optimized decisions as conditions change from day to day.
That’s where Oracle Global Trade Management Cloud — enabled by Redwood Logistics — adds incredible value. This digital cloud-native solution is purpose-built to ingest real-time data on tariffs, geopolitical events that impact shipping lanes, extreme weather, and other events that impact the global supply chain.
Enabled by artificial intelligence (AI), Oracle GTM Cloud conducts deep analysis to identify cost-savings opportunities and trade incentives, delivering the lowest-possible total landed cost on any given day. In addition to tariff costs, Oracle GTM Cloud considers available transportation modes, current freight costs, customs processes and fees, and insurance expenses. It’s a powerful tool that helps shippers navigate the complex, confusing, and dynamic global trade landscape that’s emerged this year.
Oracle GTM Cloud facilitates real-time tracking of all orders and shipments and the analysis of complex problems in micro-seconds. It also improves communication and collaboration across all partners and supplier tiers. If all stakeholders share the same awareness and work from a single version of the truth, then the larger supply chain can pivot in an orchestrated manner when new tariffs and other changes are announced.
A cautionary note: It’s essential today to run Oracle GTM Cloud, instead of an on-premises version of the software. Oracle is phasing out premium on-premises support next year for a very good reason: Oracle Cloud is designed to handle the huge volumes of real-time data, and complex partner networks, that characterize global trade today. You’re simply not going to get the speed and performance you need from on-premises versions of Oracle GTM.
